LAKE R.C.LONGMIRE

With 935 acres of water and 15 miles of shoreline, Longmire Lake provides excellent fishing for not only the people of Pauls Valley, but the entire nation. The lake is strictly a fishing lake with no water skiing or jet skiing allowed. There is, however, a swimming area at the north dock area. The absence of skiing and jet skiing is due to numerous trees both above and below water level, but it makes for some excellent fishing.
With proper lake management by the caretaker, the lake has taken off in popularity as well as quality and quantity of fish being taken. The lake was stocked in 1990 after completion in 1989. A couple of years went by to make sure the fish grew properly and adjusted to their habitat before letting anybody fish. The fishing has been great and we still only allow three bass (22-inches in length or longer) to be taken by each fisherman.
The lake was nearly 20 years in the making, but it only took a little while after the lake opened for word to get around about the great fishing at Longmire. People from all over the United States have fished the rod and reel only lake. No trout lines or jugs are permitted on or around the lake.
The lake is open for fishing 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A lighted boat ramp and parking area make for any easy time loading and unloading your boat after dark. Fishing from the bank and fishing out of a float tube are permitted, but vehicles must remain on the main roadway.
Some of the famous fishermen to fish the lake include Jimmy Houston, who has done a Jimmy Houston Outdoors show from the lake; Ken Cook, the B.A.S.S. Master Classic Champion; Roland Martin, who hosts TNN's Fishing with Roland Martin; and Jim Morton, a National B.A.S.S. Champion.
The easiest way to get to the lake from Pauls Valley is to go two block east of the tracks on Grant Street to Cherry Street. Turn right on Cherry Street and go to Garner Street at the end of Cherry. Turn left and go 10 miles until the pavement ends, turn back left 9/10 of a mile and you are at Clabber Flat Boat Ramp and the main part of the lake. The boat ramp located here is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Another boat ramp is located 12 miles east of Pauls Valley on Highway 19 and then back south two and one-half miles. This boat ramp is also open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
There is a fee to fish and to put your boat on the lake. To fish the lake for the day the fee is $2. Youngsters 15 and under, seniors 65 and older, and individuals with disabilities fish free. A yearly pass for an individual to fish is $10. The boating fee is $3 per day or $15 per year for one boat.
Okies Oar, located 2/10 of a mile south of Clabber Flats is a bait shop and convenience store. The store has full RV hook-ups, water and electric hook-ups and a dump station nearby. The 30 amp hook-ups are $10 a day and tent camping is $3 a day.
The lake is also a spot for wildlife lovers to watch and enjoy the natural habitat of the area. Quail, duck, deer, bald eagles, flowers, trees and numerous other wildlife inhabit the 2,200 acres.
Fish of all types are found throughout the lake. For an eventful day of fishing, perch can be caught from the bank or off the fishing dock. For the fisherman with a lot of patience, huge catfish have been caught and largemouth bass and crappie are the anglers choice.
A Phase II project was completed several years ago. It includes the addition of more boat ramps around the lake, a dock, a considerable number of picnic tables, a picnic shelter, charcoal grills and several restrooms. There are some 50 concrete pads available for use by campers.
A fencing project was also completed around the lake. The purpose of the fencing was to keep neighboring cattle and domesticated stock from entering the water. The construction of a new fishing pier with 60-feet of walkway at the lake was added.
For the amateur or pro fisherman, this is an excellent lake to fish. Given the opportunity, any fisherman will agree that Lake R.C. Longmire is one of the best small lakes in the state of Oklahoma.
